Konservasi sering dibicarakan melalui bahasa teknis tentang hutan, keanekaragaman hayati, kebijakan, dan krisis iklim. Namun, bagi masyarakat yang hidup dekat dengan hutan, alam bukan ruang yang jauh atau abstrak. Hutan adalah rumah, sumber air dan pangan, ruang budaya, tempat menyimpan ingatan, serta bagian dari identitas dan masa depan mereka.
Melalui cerita dari Kalimantan dan Kawasan Ekosistem Leuser, sesi ini mengajak peserta melihat konservasi melalui konsep belonging atau rasa memiliki terhadap suatu tempat. Pemutaran film dan diskusi akan menelusuri bagaimana pengalaman sehari-hari, cerita, mitos, praktik hidup, dan pengetahuan yang diwariskan antargenerasi membentuk hubungan masyarakat dengan tanah dan hutan.
Sesi ini juga memperkenalkan Tales of Belonging, platform storytelling lintas medium yang dikembangkan HAkA untuk menghadirkan masyarakat sebagai subjek yang memiliki suara, pengalaman, dan cara pandang terhadap lanskapnya. Percakapan ini diharapkan membuka pemahaman bahwa masa depan konservasi tidak hanya bergantung pada perlindungan kawasan, tetapi juga pada kemampuan kita merawat pengetahuan, hubungan, dan rasa memiliki yang membuat sebuah tempat tetap hidup.
Conservation is often discussed through the technical language of forests, biodiversity, public policy, and the climate crisis. Yet for communities living close to forests, nature is neither distant nor abstract. Forests are home, a source of water and food, a cultural space, a repository of memories, and an integral part of their identity and future.
Through stories from Kalimantan and the Leuser Ecosystem, this session invites participants to explore conservation through the concept of belonging—the sense of connection and ownership people feel toward a place. Through a film screening and discussion, the session will examine how everyday experiences, oral histories, myths, cultural practices, and intergenerational knowledge shape communities' relationships with their land and forests.
The session will also introduce the importance of placing local communities at the center of the environmental conservation narrative, recognizing them as individuals with their own voices, lived experiences, and perspectives on the landscapes they call home. Ultimately, the discussion seeks to foster a broader understanding that the future of conservation depends not only on protecting ecosystems, but also on nurturing the knowledge, relationships, and sense of belonging that keep these places alive.
