The decision of the United States Government under the leadership of President Donald Trump to withdraw from the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) should not undermine Indonesia’s commitment to climate action and energy transition. Beyond the United States, Indonesia has the opportunity to build bilateral financing cooperation with countries in the Global South to continue—and even strengthen—its climate and energy transition commitments.

The global energy transition is no longer associated with the advancements of the developed countries; middle power nations are now leading the way with contextual strategies that forge an inclusive path to net-zero.

During Simon Stiell’s official visit to Indonesia Net-Zero Summit 2026, the Executive Secretary of the UNFCCC stated his institution's readiness to become Indonesia's strategic partner in realizing its net-zero 2050 ambition and leading a just energy transition in the region and the world.

On 20 August 2025, the Foreign Policy Community of Indonesia (FPCI) and the Institute of Climate Change and Sustainable Development (ICCSD), Tsinghua University, co-hosted the RE:Think Net-Zero Diplomacy: Indonesia–China Track 1.5 Dialogue on Climate Change and Clean Energy Cooperation in Beijing, People’s Republic of China, with the support of the China New Energy International Alliance.

On 24 September 2025, Foreign Policy Community of Indonesia, together with The Institute of Energy Economics, Japan (IEEJ), co-hosted the RE:Think Net-Zero Diplomacy: Indonesia-Japan Track 1.5 Dialogue for the Climate and Renewable Energy Transition in Tokyo, Japan.

On 11 April 2025, the FPCI Climate Unit hosted a virtual public discussion “State of Global Climate Politics 2025 – Climate Action vs. Political Uncertainty: Can the World Stay on Track with the Paris Agreement?” To explore these pressing issues, FPCI convened three distinguished climate experts and practitioners from the United States, India, and Brazil.
